Premier League clubs intensify battle for Goretzka's signature

Schalke star Leon Goretzka has been one of Europe’s hottest prospects after his outstanding performances in the Confederation Cup in July, and with his contract running out in the summer the race for his signature has intensified.

Goretzka’s fine form, which includes six goals in 12 games for Germany and four goals in nine for Schalke this season, has attracted interest from top European clubs among which Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

But recent reports suggest that no less than four Premier League clubs are bent on securing the signature of the 22-year-old: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

City boss Pep Guardiola has a keen nose for talent, and it won’t be a surprise if he goes for Goretzka this January, but such a move will ultimately come down to whether Goretzka thinks he can get a regular first-team spot under the Catalan.

With Yaya Toure increasingly likely to leave next year, and Fernandinho, who turns 33 soon, this looks to be the case. But should Goretzka end up at the Etihad, he will face competition from Bernardo Silva and compatriot Ilkay Gundogan.

However, if the youngster has a patient streak in him, he might find the idea of linking up with fellow countrymen Gundogan and Leroy Sane an appealing one.

Last season, he averaged 1.8 shots, 2.7 dribbles, 2.3 tackles, 2.7 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game. All stats that Guardiola will surely find appealing.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also reportedly interested in the midfielder. The Reds will dive into the winter transfer window in bid to replace Emre Can who looks set to leave Anfield while Arsene Wenger might be tempted of completing another bargain following the summer success story of Sead Kolasinac.

Goretzka has already expressed his desire to move to England after his contract expires at the end of the season, but should Barcelona come knocking in January his resolve will be tested.
