David Silva signs a new one-year City deal

David Silva has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester City which will keep him at the club until 2020, have announced.

The 31-year-old joined the Citizens in 2010 and has remained a key player ever since under a variety of managers: Roberto Mancini, Brian Kidd, Manuel Pellegrini and now Pep Guardiola. He’s racked up 324 games for the Light Blues, scoring 52 goals and providing 72 assists to date.

The Spanish playmaker remains an important cog in Guardiola’s quest to remain undefeated on the way to the title this season.

“I am so happy to have committed my future to City.” Silva told the club website. “I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved at City in my seven-and-a-half seasons here and with Pep in charge, I feel we are in great position to win trophies this season and beyond.

“They style of football we are playing is a pleasure to be part of and I look forward to winning more titles in the years to come.”

City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain has also issued a formal announcement of the deal and has hinted that Silva’s service to the club might continue in some other way beyond his retirement as a player.

He said: “We are very pleased with this announcement. Not only has David Silva been central to the Club’s success over recent years, [but] he remains one of team’s key players.

“He has shown again this season that he is the best creative midfielder in English football and he will be very important in developing our talented young players in the coming years.”

City have an important test coming next Sunday when they visit rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Silva counted on to play a key role in getting all the points.
