Totti to retire and become director at Roma

Long-serving Roma captain Francesco Totti will retire at the end of the season and will be offered a job upstairs, the club’s new sporting director Monchi has revealed.

Totti, who is considered one of football’s most iconic captains, debuted for Roma in 1992 and played in over 800 appearances, scoring 250 goals, over 25 seasons. The club now intend to show their gratitude for his years of service by giving him a six-year deal to serve as director.

“In terms of Totti, I already knew that there was an agreement with the club that this would be his final year as a player, then he’d start as a director.” Monchi said.

“Francesco is Roma, I want to be as close to him as possible. I’d love to learn even one per cent of the huge amount that he knows.”

Totti, 40, stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in Roma’s second-leg defeat to Villareal in the Europa League in February. He has made 23 appearances and scored three goals so far this season.

His last game for Roma is expected to be against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico later this month.
