Rumours about the potential departure of Julian Weigl from Borussia Dortmund continue to circulate in the media.
Multiple sources have now confirmed that Barcelona and Manchester City are hell-bent on snatching the midfielder despite the player renewing his contract in December.
Barcelona’s interest in Weigl is long-standing, but so is Pep Guardiola’s. The Catalans are keen on finding a player who will take some weight of Sergio Busquets’ shoulders and have identified Weigl as the perfect fit, while Guardiola is an admirer of the young German and is looking to secure the deep-laying position at Manchester City as Fernandinho and Yaya Toure’s contracts run out in the summer.
Should a transfer happen, Dortmund’s unwillingness to sell could hit the pockets of potential buyers. This, however, is not a scary prospect for either of the clubs involved. The centre-midfield specialist has been branded ‘the new Sergio Busquets’, so it is hardly a surprise Barcelona want him, but they would have to back their ambition with gold as Guardiola enjoys an excellent relationship with the oil-rich Manchester City owners.

Weigl has turned into one of Europe’s most desired players since he emerged in top-tier football in 2015, when he moved from 1860 Munich. He has gone on to become an automatic scribble on Thomas Tuchel’s line-up sheet. The 22-year-old has so far played in over 90 games for Borussia, adding five more for his national side as a consequence.
It has not all been rosy for Weigl, however, as his steady progress was blighted by a broken ankle in May this year. Since returning three months later, Weigl has played another six games and scored one goal for Die Borussen.
It is believed a bid in the region of £70-80 million could tempt the German club to part ways with their rising star.
