After being unwell, Virgil van Dijk will not be playing for Liverpool on Thursday and manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that van Dijk will remain recovering at home.
The Reds will now be going into matchday four without the Dutchman. Despite this, they lead Group E going into France with nine points from their opening three games.
Thankfully, Klopp has assured Liverpool supporters that Van Dijk’s illness is not life-threatening and that his absence is more due to his wish to prevent the virus from spreading across the team.
Before such an important match, Klopp is nervous to avoid taking any needless chances. Brentford is scheduled to visit Anfield on Sunday, and they will go to Manchester City the following weekend.
“Virgil is a little bit ill, it will not be a big thing but we didn’t want him on the plane and maybe others have it a little bit as well,” said Klopp. “That’s why we left him at home. It should be all right for the weekend.”
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez started Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Toulouse last month, while Van Dijk was not used as a substitute in either of the team’s past two Europa League games.
