Germany’s Timo Werner, a striker, has joined Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig.

A permanent relocation option is included in the 27-year-old’s London contract. He increases the alternatives available to Tottenham for forward play, as James Maddison is out due to injury and Son Heung-min is travelling with South Korea for the Asian Cup.

Werner remarked, “I had a great conversation with the Spurs management. As soon as I spoke with the manager, he immediately gave me the sensation I needed to join the team. Moreover, his preferred playing style and strategies are what I like to see and how I like to play, so it was ideal.”

After moving to Chelsea for £45 million in 2020 from Bundesliga team Leipzig, Werner has Premier League experience with the Blues. With 23 goals in 89 games, he won the Club World Cup, the Super Cup, and the Champions League for Chelsea before moving back to Leipzig in 2022.

He’s made 14 appearances this season and has two goals, although he was not present for Saturday’s friendly against St Gallen due to Tottenham transfer negotiations. Though he has 57 caps for Germany, Werner last appeared on the field in a March 2023 friendly loss to Belgium.

Werner may be ready for Sunday’s Premier League match between Spurs and Manchester United (16:30 GMT), but his transfer is pending international clearance. Tottenham are fifth in the top flight, six points behind leaders Liverpool.
