Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas will take part in the Dakar Rally in South America in bid to raise awareness for a number of charities trying to help people through sport.
Villas-Boas, 40, coached Chelsea between 2011 and 12 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur, Zenit St Petersburg and, until recently, Shanghai Sipg. Before the Blues, he plied his trade at Porto, first under Jose Mourinho and then as a manager in the 2010-11 season.
Villas-Boas will set off from Lima, Peru, on a 15-day off-road trip to Cordoba, Argentina – some 2000 miles to the south of his starting destination. He will be part of a two-man team, including experienced off-road driver Ruben Faria.
“It’s a lifetime ambition of mine to one time do the Dakar, one of the most difficult rallies in the world.” Boas told the event organisers. “The numbers were just right this year. I’m 40 years old, it’s the 40th edition, my uncle did the Dakar when he was 40.
“For me it is an honour to take the name of Laureus and the work they do in their projects worldwide, in the end I want to raise awareness for projects like this.”
