Arsenal keen on signing Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Arsenal have identified Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as a potential long-term replacement for Petr Cech who turns 36 next year, multiple sources report.

The former Chelsea stopper is undoubtedly one of the world’s best goalkeepers, but it is believed his advancing age has led many to believe that he is past his prime.

While Ter Stegen seems like a good fit for Arsenal, it remains unclear whether Barcelona would want to part ways with their incumbent keeper after losing Claudio Bravo to Manchester City last year. Another stumble in such a deal could be the Gunners’ inability to offer Stegen Champions League football at present time and his current release clause of 180 million.

Should Arsenal go for the German in the summer, however, they will also face competition from PSG and Juventus, according to reports.

The Serie A defending champions signed Wojciech Szczesny in this summer, but are believed to rate Ter Stegen higher than the Pole in their bid to find a long-term successor to veteran Gianluigi Buffon, who is retiring at the end of the season.

Meanwhile PSG want a brand new goalkeeper, following the poor performance of Kevin Trapp and Alphonse Areola and boast the cash resources to make such a deal happen.

Ter Stegen signed a new contract with the Catalans in May this year to extend his stay until 2022.
