After Australia declined to submit a proposal to host the event, Saudi Arabia was selected to host the men’s World Cup in 2034.

Football Australia made its decision known just a few hours before FIFA’s deadline for declaring interest on Tuesday. The only other country to submit a proposal is Saudi Arabia.

An official statement from Football Australia stated, “We have decided not to do so for the 2034 competition.”  Mexico, the United States, and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup. The 2030 World Cup will see matches hosted in Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, and Portugal in addition to Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.

Since 2018, football, formula 1, golf, and boxing events have all taken place in Saudi Arabia. The sports minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, stated that the nation’s candidacy for the World Cup “constitutes a crucial and natural step in our path as a country enthusiastic about football.”
