Chelsea sold star-forward Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid in the summer following a break down between the player and his manager Antonio Conte.
The Blues opted to bolster their forward line with Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi, but the results have been far from satisfying. Morata has been far too injury prone while Batshuayi seems to have fallen out with Conte and is on his way out of Stamford Bridge.
With Alexis Sanchez joining United from Arsenal and Manchester City’s domination of the league this season, Chelsea’s chances of defending their title are quickly evaporating.
The only possible solution seems to be another big splash of cash in the transfer window. We take a look at what can be done:
Eden Hazard replacement
The Blues recorded an impressive 3-0 win in the FA Cup thanks to an impressive Eden Hazard performance.
While the result might have been impressive , Chelsea are in desperate need of reinforcements despite the options of Willian and Pedro Rodriguez. This is especially true against tougher opposition and should the team get afflicted by injuries.
This is why Riyad Mahrez would be an excellent option of strengthening the squad.
Champions League glory
Chelsea will meet Barcelona in a little less than a month now in what promises to be an eye-catching contest.
With the Blues lacking the necessary depth though, it might prove to be something else.
But should they opt to sign Mahrez, they will have a deadly trio up front. With the recent addition of Olivier Giroud, this could be just enough to launch a worthy challenge to Barcelona.
Mahrez will certainly feel like he has something prove too as he hasn’t played Champions League football before. It certainly look a like a win-win situation for the Blues. The thing is: will Maria Granovskaia agree to spend another 60 million by transfer deadline day. This remains to be seen.
Newly found confidence
Then there is the influx of energy that comes with signing a quality player. And Mahrez can certainly give Chelsea that push back to recovery following some really inconsistent string of results.
A move for Mahrez could stimulate freshness and euphoria among the Chelsea mix. His quality is such that it will inject confidence into the dressing room. The Blues still hold a mathematical chance for winning three trophies (FA Cup, Champions League and the Premier League), so they are not yet down and out.
And with the latest reports suggesting that Manchester City have now placed a bid for him and with the transfer window quickly approaching its end, the Blues might not get another shot at rejuvenating their season.
