Former German international Oliver Khan has criticised Mesut Ozil for lacking initiative to apply his talents on the pitch following Arsenal’s abysmal performance against Bayern Munich.
Ozil looked lost and lacking desire to make his mark onto the game as Arsenal were left with having to pull nothing short of a miracle in the second leg to progress to the next Champions League round.
Khan said: “Of course Arsenal have their qualities, especially on the counter-attack, and they have good players like Ozil, but I haven’t seen him. Maybe you saw him.
“It’s sad to see what Ozil is calling a performance, how passive he plays, a player of his genius and qualities–it’s a shame.”
The former German goalkeeper also suggested Arsenal’s problems may lay in potential lack of communication between players and manager.
“It looks like the players don’t take the coach seriously anymore.” he added.
“I’ve never seen a team play so bad. Bayern played a team so catastrophically bad without the ball.”
The result intensified doubts over Wenger’s Arsenal future after 20 years at the helm of the club. His contract runs out at the end of the season.
