Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he used to try and emulate his childhood idol Thierry Henry ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Arsenal.
Lewandowski, 28, has performed terrifically for Bayern since he joined in 2008, having scored 62 goals in 83 appearances. His top performance extends to this season as he has so far accumulated 20 goals in all competitions. Lewadowksi says he might have learned a thing or two from ex-Arsenal striker.
“Henry played in the same position as me as a striker and it was amazing to see what he did with the ball and without the ball.” Lewadowski told The Times.
“I loved the way he ran with the ball and his technique was something I wanted to copy. I was amazed at all the goals he scored with a quick body swerve in particular. He was the complete striker, although maybe he didn’t have the best header!”
The Polish striker spoke ahead of yet another meeting between the two familiar foes. The two clubs are set to meet for the third time in the last four years with Bayern having the advantage of five wins in contrast to Arsenal’s three in the overall statistics.
Bayern will be without star defender Jerome Boateng, out with a tendon injury, while Arsenal will miss Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, who are out with long-term injuries. Hector Bellerin is also doubtful for the fixture.
The first leg will be played at the Allianz Arena, while Bayern travel to London for the decider on March 7th.
