Is Napoli’s top striker Diers Mertens moving England in January?

Transfer Gossip: Is Dries Mertens On His Way to Manchester United?

Napoli’s Belgian forward Dries Mertens has been lighting up the Calcio A as of late and shows no signs of stopping as he is beginning to attract attention from a number of top European clubs.

Mertens, 30, has bagged seven goals in just six league starts and, helping Napoli achieve a flawless seven game run to occupy the top position in the Italian league.

Now reports suggest Mertens’ fine form has attracted interest from Jose Mourinho who might look to lure the striker out of Italy. Despite signing a new contract with the Gli Azzuri in May, Mertens’ contract has a release clause of €28 million, according to Napoli’s former sporting director Pierpaolo Marino.

With the ageing Zlatan Ibrahimovic on board, and Anthony Martial rumoured to be looking for a move away, Mertens could prove to be a bargain for the Red Devils, despite worries that the player may be a tad overpriced. Although the 30-year-old is currently in top form, he probably only has a few years left at the peak of his game.

This worry, however, could be alleviated by the fact that Mertens is a world class forward who is also versatile enough to be played wide as well.

Should Mourinho opt to go for Mertens in January, it is likely that Arsenal might be in the way. Earlier reports suggested that Mertens actually turned down a move to the Gunners over the summer, choosing instead to bide his time and remain a Champions League player for the time being.

Other rumours have linked Mertens to a move to Real Madrid, yet the Spanish club’s persistence on Spurs’ Harry Kane is enough to warrant such a deal off-the-cards for the moment.
