The opportunity to sign David de Gea as a free agent was given to Newcastle United.

Starting goalkeeper Nick Pope suffered a dislocated shoulder during Saturday night’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United, which delivered the Magpies a serious blow in the goalkeeping department.

Pope will choose whether or not to have surgery later this week, and Newcastle has scheduled his comeback for April. Although there have been rumours linking Newcastle to Aaron Ramsdale, the Gunners are unlikely to allow a trade during the January transfer window since they view Ramsdale as a long-term pursuit.

TBIS is aware that De Gea has been offered to Newcastle an option, even though the club would prefer that he play for a team in Europe, preferably in the Champions League. Newcastle is still planning to continue with backup Martin Dubravka in goal.

With his contract expiring at Manchester United this summer and having rejected offers from Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, De Gea has not made a snap decision on his future. From discussions on such a transfer to the Middle East, Newcastle’s Saudi PIF owners are familiar with De Gea’s camp. Additionally, Lionel Messi’s MLS team Inter Miami has lately shown interest in the 33-year-old.

Financial Fair Play constraints have contributed to Newcastle’s reluctance to make a significant January transfer for a new goalkeeper. For similar reasons, they are hopeful that Kalvin Phillips, a midfield player for Manchester City, can be loaned initially. This will occupy the second of their two domestic loan slots; Lewis Hall of Chelsea will occupy the other.
