Will Marouane Fellaini Sign a New Contract at Manchester United?

Fellaini is reportedly not happy with Manchester United contract offer. Will he sign?

Marouane Fellaini may completely divide opinion amongst Manchester United fans but the big Belgian appears to remain a favourite of manager Jose Mourinho. The former Everton midfielder was signed by David Moyes and is often the scapegoat for Red Devil fans when things aren’t going to plan but he plays an important role in the side.

Fellaini made his first start of the season on September 16th when deputising for the injured Paul Pogba and helped guide his side to a comfortable victory against his former employers but the midfielder isn’t rushing to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old is into the final year of his contract and is believed to be unhappy with the terms offered by the club. He joined in 2013 to link up with his former boss David Moyes but it hasn’t always been plain sailing for the Belgian international. He hasn’t always been a regular starter and discipline has been an issue with the midfielder collecting nine yellow cards and one red last season against rivals Manchester City. However, Fellaini has been given an important role under Jose Mourinho with the former Chelsea boss a fan of his battling qualities and immense aerial ability.

A combination of the money offered and doubts over the length of the contract are believed to be preventing Fellaini from signing an extended deal with the club but the two parties are currently in negotiations.

The combative star turns thirty in November and United are continually cautious when it comes to handing long lucrative contracts to players of this age. This could prove a stumbling block. With the arrival of Nemanja Matic this summer, Fellaini had been heavily linked with a move to Turkish club Galatasaray but the transfer failed to materialise. A number of top European clubs are likely to be on high alert and waiting for further developments.

The Belgian is likely to get plenty of minutes under his belt this season with Manchester United competing in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Squad rotation is very important this season and they displayed their strength in depth when beating Burton in the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup on September 20th and, as a result, they’ve been priced up as joint-favourites for the competition.

They began their Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 success against Swiss Super League outfit Basel and have also been drawn alongside CSKA Moscow and Benfica. The Red Devils have made a blistering start to the campaign and, with a much more balanced squad, they have been installed as 3/1 second favourites to clinch the Premier League title this season. Fellaini is likely to play an important role this season as the fixtures come thick and fast, with many pundits tipping them to land yet more silverware this year.

Mourinho considers Fellaini a valuable asset and will not want to lose the 29-year-old. He has recently praised his player suggesting his side are ‘weaker’ without the presence of the Belgian and is likely to be urging the club to do all they can to tie down the midfielder. His style may not be every fan’s cup of tea and he certainly isn’t going to win the hearts of any football purists but his uncompromising attitude is a handy addition to any squad, especially one that will feature in four different competitions. If Mourinho gets his own way, Fellaini is likely to be offered better terms and remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
