Ferguson: Why I brought Carrick to United

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Michael Carrick’s confidence and professional attitude as a young man was the reason he brought the player to Manchester United, the club website reports.

The legendary manager spoke before Carrick’s testimonial which will be played in June this year in which Ferguson himself will come out of retirement one more time to manage Carrick’s eleven.

“From the minute we bought him, his character has always been absolutely outstanding.” Ferguson said. “He’s a football man and that character, plus his ability, made him a certainty to be a big success here.

“When we were discussing him and were ready to make a bid, we were looking at his background and one of the things that stuck out to me was as a young boy, he went down to play for West Ham.

“A 16-year-old kid going way down from Newcastle to east London – that’s a trek, and it epitomised to me the confidence the boy had in himself. That impressed me.”

Carrick joined United from Tottenham Hotspur on a record-breaking 18.6 million transfer and spent 11 fruitful years in the red shirt. He played over 443 games at the Theatre of Dreams, scoring 24 goals. But his importance as a player stemmed from his ability to calm the players around him as well as rarely make a mistake. Recent statistic have confirmed that United had not lost a game with 35-year-old Carrick as a starter.

Carrick is one of United’s most decorated players with 16 trophies under his belt and was part of the treble-winning squad of 2008.
