Zlatan Ibrahimovic has thanked fans for their support  on Twitter following his seven-month absence from the game due to a serious injury.

Ibrahimovic, 36, graced the pitch in the 77th minute in Manchester United’s 4-1 demolition of Newcastle on Sunday. His recovery comes ahead of plan with initial evaluations having had him ruled out until the New Year.

Ibrahimovic's knee gave way in April during United's Europa League clash against Anderlecht with the Swede later revealing that the extend of the damage to his knee ligaments was worse than expected.

The Swede wrote on his Twitter after his miraculous recovery: “Thanks to everybody who stood by my side for the last months. Thanks to my family, coach, teammates, Mino, Dario Fort, Dahan, Dr Fu, Dr Volker, Man Utd and the most important: my fanz.

“This was not a one man work without all of you I would not be playing football today. Thank you and I love you.”

Ibrahimovic produced an a stellar debut season for United since arriving from PSG in the summer of 2016. He topped the club’s goal-scoring charts with 17 goals that season despite having his playing year prematurely cut short by the injury.

The fine form led United to offer Ibrahimovic a one-year extension to his contract to keep him until the summer of next year.

Mourinho and company are eight-points behind city rivals Manchester City after 12 games in the Premier League table, but will be encouraged by the returns of Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

Pogba also made a return against Newcastle, scoring a goal and assisting for another before being replaced by Marouane Fellaini quarter of an hour before the final whistle.

The Red Devils travel to Switzerland tomorrow to play Basel in Match 5 of the Champions League Group Stage.
