Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea: What the Statistics Say

Analysis of the statistics in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup

Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea: What the Statistics Say

Some positivity might have been injected into the Gunners as they beat Chelsea to progress to the Carabao Cup final to keep their chances of a trophy this season alive.

The home side were pegged back by Eden Hazard’s opener but goals from Antonio Rudiger (own goal) and Granit Xhaka turned the tides around.

Arsenal will now have another difficult challenge in on-fire Manchester City in the final.

Here is what the statistic said about the match:

Shots on target

Arsenal – 4, Chelsea – 2

Arsenal certainly showed they are no pushovers. They tested Chelsea’s goal on four occasions as compared to Chelsea’s just two attempts.

Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Alex Iwobi delivered the goods, but the player who stood out most, even as an attacking threat, was Nacho Monreal.

Shots off target

Arsenal – 7, Chelsea – 10

Compared to the first left, this was a much more open game. The statistics demonstrate the intensity and focus on attacking play..

Arsenal pulled off a total of seven shots off target while Chelsea had 10 shots off target.

Perhaps the Blues lacked accuracy in front of goal, and this was costly. Antonio Conte will be surely looking to address this problem in the coming days until the transfer windows closes.

Possession

Arsenal – 52%, Chelsea – 48%

Urged by the home support, Arsenal found themselves with the ball at their feet for most of the time. It wasn’t a spectacular possession play, but judging by the result, it worked.

Corners

Arsenal – 4, Chelsea – 9

Arsenal have shown that they have progressed with defence from static situations compared to last season.

The Blues received nine opportunities to hit the home side from corners, but failed to do so.

Offsides

Arsenal – 10, Chelsea – 1

The Gunners were victims of series of offside calls in the 90 minutes contest as they sought to win the match day all means.

All the same the Blues showed calmness in attacking approach unlike Arsenal that did so with a genuine attacking aim down the Chelsea goal.

The Chelsea back-line did a good job exposing the Arsenal forwards’ lack of awareness by placing them in an offside position 10 times. Perhaps this is something that needs to be worked out at the Colney training centre.

Fouls

Arsenal – 11, Chelsea -16

The statistics showed that the London clash at the Emirate was a frenetic fiesta as both teams engaged in physical duel in the course of the match.

This match produced a total of 27 fouls due to the technical and individual persistence of each players to outwit each other in the match.

This saw Arsenal commit 11 fouls, five less than Chelsea that had 16 fouls in the entire 90 minutes.
