Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United: Player Ratings

The Gunners succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to rivals Manchester United on Saturday as Jose Mourinho pulled the trigger at the Emirates Stadium with counter-attacking football.

As invigorating as it might have been for the Arsenal players to display some of the most beautiful and dominant performance in recent times, it must have been equally frustrating to lose the match.

We take a look at how the individual Arsenal players fared in the clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Petr Cech – 6.0

The veteran shot-stopper had an unspectacular day between the sticks. He stood his ground with some decent saves in the game but could do nothing for the three goals as he was left exposed by the defenders in front of him.

Laurent Koscielny – 5.5

The French star was at the heart of Arsenal’s defence but his partnership with German defender Shkodran Mustafi was exposed by United’s quick counter-attacks at times.

Shkodran Mustafi – 3.5

He made a mistake that led to United scoring their second goal. That summed up his day, leaving Arsenal on the back foot for most of the match.

Nacho Monreal – 5.5

The Spaniard looked shaky in defence but added fire power going forward. He held the ball well for a big chunk of the game.

Hector Bellerin – 6.0

The right wing-back showed speed and a good head in attack but was caught out of position several times when United countered.

Sead Kolasinac – 6.0

The talented defender gave his share of support in the attacking phase of the game but should have done better at the back.  Antonio Valencia made the best of this position to give United the early lead in the game.

Granit Xhaka – 5.5

As usual, Xhaka had a decent game: covered space well in the middle of the park, contributed with good passing to set-up attacks and had a strike off target in the first half. But he should have done more in midfield to track the runs of United’s players in bid to prevent counter-attacks.

Aaron Ramsey – 6.0

The hardworking Welshman showed quality in midfield. He provided the required flow and co-ordination that Arsenal needed at some point in the game.

Provided the assist for Lacazette’s goal but still needed to do more to help Arsenal rescue the game at home.

Mesut Ozil – 6.5

The German showed quality in the match. He orchestrated Arsenal free-flowing moves in the final third. He grew frustrated as his team was exposed on the counter attack.

Alexis Sanchez – 6.0

Sanchez was exemplary in the game, just like Mesut. He offered creativity and vibrancy to Arsenal’s attack, and United needed to be at their best to contain him.

Alexandre Lacazette – 7.0

The French striker showed what he is made of as he scored to reduce the deficit for Arsenal. His work rate and ball play were also awesome especially with regards to opposing center forward Romelu Lukaku.

Substitutes

Alex Iwobi – 4.0

The Nigerian showed quality in his passing, but his movement towards the opponent’s goal revealed a lack of courage and rhythm. He needed to do more for Arsenal as the Gunners needed someone to make things right at the moment.

Danny Welbeck – 3.5

He came on to add fire-power to the Arsenal side and was responsible for adding a bit of chaos to United’s defence. But, in truth, he was not clinical enough.

Olivier Giroud – 3.5

The attacker was introduced to give his side some area advantage as time was really running out for Arsenal, but he could do nothing as the Red Devil’s defended stoutly in the match.
