Ibrahimovic produced an a stellar debut season for United since arriving from PSG in the summer of 2016. He topped the club’s goal-scoring charts with 17 goals that season despite having his playing year prematurely cut short by the injury.

The fine form led United to offer Ibrahimovic a one-year extension to his contract to keep him until the summer of next year.

Mourinho and company are eight-points behind city rivals Manchester City after 12 games in the Premier League table, but will be encouraged by the returns of Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

Pogba also made a return against Newcastle, scoring a goal and assisting for another before being replaced by Marouane Fellaini quarter of an hour before the final whistle.

The Red Devils travel to Switzerland tomorrow to play Basel in Match 5 of the Champions League Group Stage.
