Luiz on why players tick under Conte’s 3-4-3 and his critics

David Luiz has revealed that Chelsea players have excelled under the Italian’s 3-4-3 formation because each of them is perfectly suited for their position.

The Italian manager earned a herd of admirers for his innovative use of the three man defence, but according to Luiz it was more a case of Conte adapting his tactics to the players rather than the other way around.

“I am playing in a more tactical position. I need to be ready to occupy the space of the others. So it’s more about action than reaction.” he said. “The system is very good because we have the players to fit in their positions. Like you can see that Victor Moses is amazing in his position, nobody knew that before.

“It’s not about the system, it’s about the characteristics of the players. We have a perfect mix and we are happy with this.”

Luiz’ move to England for his second spell with Chelsea in the summer was viewed by many as a bad move, but he has come to draw the plaudits for his performances within Conte’s back-three set up as the Blues are closing in on a potential double this year.

“Of course it’s nice to hear from players who know their football, have played and won a lot.” he said. “I’m a positive guy and I always imagine the best for me. I’m so realistic. When I came back I knew I was going to play in the most difficult league in the world.

“It was difficult for us at the beginning, but now we, not just me, are playing very well. It’s good to be this way. Of course I am happy, but this season is not over. Football changes from one day to the next, so I keep my feet on the floor, stay grounded.

“I keep my humility. People ask me if this is the best form of my career. I don’t remember the past, I’m getting old! But I don’t think I’m playing very well.

“I’m older and have more experience. I am more mature and I am happy with this.”
